I’m guessing I’d read over someone’s shoulder on a subway. It’s been so long since I’ve used public transportation (it’s not that great here), but I totally see myself doing that.

I can write at a restaurant if no one is sitting DIRECTLY NEXT TO ME. I can do it if it’s another writer, too.

Okay, well, the instructor is kinda good looking in a really young 20-something way…

I think part of my problem is I was about to write an argument using a naughty word and didn’t want him reading that.

I don’t think I’ve ever run in to this issue. Not sure how I would handle it. I’ve written at coffee shops and the like, but always when I had my own table. I think I would probably be able to write most scenes, even if a stranger was possibly looking over my shoulder. That probably comes from riding crowded NYC buses and subways during my formative years. Lots of reading over people’s shoulders goes on there. But I’d probably think twice before writing a love scene! That probably comes from the fact that the older I get, the more prudish I get. Go figure.

Mary, good response. What you said is the same thing I do at retreats, etc.
Abigail, are you sure you weren’t distracted by other things??? Kidding! Actually, it took me a while to get comfortable writing in public. It’s still not my favorite thing to do, but it works for me when I’m stumped…sometimes. And, about Camp NaNo…no worries. You’re a professional. You’ve got this. RAR!

Me, too, on writing around strangers (although I’m in a MacAlister’s right now on WiFi) I’m not doing plotting/creating kind of work. Like Mary, I can write at a write in or on a retreat, but that’s among others who completely understand what’s going on. And they’re quiet, too LOL

I know what you mean about not being able to write sitting next to folks. My issue isn’t the other people around, so much as me being distracted.

But I can write when sitting across from other writers on writing retreats. I think it’s the idea that I’m there to work and so is everyone else.

Hmmm…maybe try pretending the folks around you are writers on a deadline?

LOL! Excellent story, Abigail! I’ve never done it but I did come close once or twice. If it ever happens to me, I think if no one was using the bathroom, I would do what you did. But if, heaven forbid, someone was actually at the urinal, I’d be out of there like a shot. I’d just head straight for the ladies room and wash up there. And if you decide to use the experience in a novel, I think it would be a great way to “show” a major aspect of the character’s personality by whatever you decide to have her do.

And I know you said “don’t ask,” Lynne, but we are asking! What gives withe the red dress?
